Frozen Out
Tens of thousands of Detroit residents are struggling to survive without running water and other critical utilities because of welfare cuts and new, aggressive "cost recovery" programs by utility companies.

This video clip is part of an ongoing documentary project to raise awareness about utility shut-offs and the struggle for access to essential resources in Michigan.

Dear Friends,

We need support your financial support.

In the past 79 days 4500 Detroit homes have had water service shut off.

Over 9,000 families are living without gas and electricity in Detroit this winter and 20,000 more are in immediate shut-off status. Since the end of vendor pay programs in this state in on October 31st there is no protection against utility shut-offs, even in the winter. People are freezing. They are burning to death in their homes as they try to stay warm with kerosene heaters and candles.

We are a mother/daughter media team working with the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization to get this story out. We know the people whose lives are being damaged by inhumane policies, they have asked us to help and we have produced a ten-minute video.

Our grassroots media work on Michigan water issues has been used in schools, churches and public forums and by PBS?s Lehrer News Hour, the National Geographic Channel and Fox News. Our documentation of water privatization (Nestle) in Michigan has helped raise the issue nationally. We knew it was important. We covered the story and gave the footage away for free to whoever could use it. We think this strategy could work with the situation in Detroit.

We need support in order to continue to produce coverage, to make copies, to set up screenings and to cover the costs of transportation and phone calls.

We are asking for any amount that you can afford; even small donations will help this critical situation.

Thank you very much,
Eartha Melzer and Kate Trainer
