75 Traverse area residents stood for one hour today along Grandview Parkway, holding the Traverse Area Peace and Justice Community's 1/2 mile long black ribboned rope. Approximately 20,000 ribbons are tied on the rope, representing the more than 100,000 deaths from the latest war in Iraq.
On this Memorial Day we stood first and foremost to honor the 100,000 or more innocent Iraqis that have perished during this unjustified war. We also honored another type of American hero: the US soldier who refuses to be deployed to Iraq, the US soldier who refuses to return to Iraq for a second tour of duty, the US soldier who sees firsthand the disaster of US foreign policy and leaves his/her unit and goes AWOL among the Iraqis and the high school students throughout the United States that are organizing to get military recruiters out of their schools.
We also honored each other for coming out today when we all could have been doing other things on such a bright and sunny day. We applauded each other's courage to continue to speak out against the catastrophe that has befallen the Iraqi people.
We expressed principled compassion for US families that have soldiers in Iraq. These boys and girls, men and women, should come home NOW. Our grief for them as well as for the 10's of 1,000's Iraqi dead motivate us to speak out now more than ever against this war.
As we stood today, we condemned the current "braceletting" of Baghdad by Iraqi police and the US military. We acknowledged the Iraqi resistance's varied efforts to defeat all forms of occupation. We asked ourselves what we would do if Traverse City were invaded by a foreign government, the city surrounded, house to house searches were commonplace and check points strangled our every move. The right to resist such occupation would then be ours as it now is the Iraqis
We ended the day with a potluck/picnic on the Grand Traverse Bay. Kifta kabob sandwiches were sold, with the proceeds going to Iraqi Families in Need.
